Moorgate Train Crash

On February 28th, 1975 a train pulled into Moorgate, the end of a line. Travelling too fast to stop, it passed through a 40 foot sand-drag and into the end of the tunnel.

The resulting crash killed 43 people, including the driver of the train.

No mechanical problems were found with the train.

An autopsy of the driver showed no medical problems which could have led to him failing to apply the brake, and X-rays of his hands showed that they were on the brake at the time of the crash.

The incident investigation, concluded that the driver was responsible, although no precise cause was identified.

Sometimes, despite an incident investigation being carried out, you just cannot be sure.
