Life Cycle of a System Safety Program

Various forms of the safety life cycle exist in different safety standards. Most allow customisations to be made to the life cycle to adapt it to the current practices of an organisation, with a proviso that the requirements are met.

The safety engineering aspects of the safety life cycle, depending upon the safety standard followed, will generally go through hazard identification and risk assessment to derive safety requirements before the engineering process takes over to realise the system. Once a system has undergone installation and commissioning and is in operation, it is monitored (hopefully without need for incident investigation) and any maintenance and modification done before it eventually undergoes decommissioning and disposal. All of these go on in parallel with a range of safety management tasks.

Warning:

The safety life cycle should not be distinct from the rest of the life cycle, but integrated with it.
